How to play

The objective is to flag every mine and reveal every safe cell. If you click on a mine, the game ends immediately. Numbers on revealed cells tell you how many mines are hidden in the 8 neighboring cells (including diagonals). By combining these hints, you can infer which cells are safe and which likely contain mines, gradually clearing the entire board.

There are three difficulty levels—Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert—each with different board sizes and mine counts. New players should start on Beginner to get familiar with the rules and controls, then move up to higher difficulties to test their speed and precision.

Controls

  • Left click (desktop): Reveal a covered cell. If it is not a mine, a number indicating adjacent mines appears; if it is a mine, the game ends.
  • Right click (desktop): Cycle the cell state—first click places a flag (you think there is a mine), second click changes it to a question mark (unsure), and a third click clears all marks back to blank.
  • Long press (mobile / tablet): Works like right click—first long press adds a flag, second long press turns it into a question mark, and the third long press clears the mark so you can re-evaluate the cell.
  • Number-cell chord: When a revealed number cell has exactly as many flagged neighbors as its number, clicking that number will automatically reveal all remaining covered neighbors. This greatly speeds up play, but if your flags are incorrect you may uncover a mine and lose the game.
  • Reset game: After a win or a loss, click the face button at the top to instantly restart with the current difficulty and try for a better time.

Q: Is there a time limit?

A: There is no hard time limit. You can think as long as you like. The game automatically tracks how long you take to finish, so you can challenge your personal best or compare results with friends.

Q: What if I place a flag in the wrong spot?

A: Simply right click (or long press on mobile) the cell again to cycle through the mark states and clear it, then decide again whether the cell is safe or not.

Q: What is the difference between difficulties?

A: Higher difficulties use larger boards and more mines. Beginner is great for learning, Intermediate offers a balanced challenge, and Expert is designed for players who enjoy dense, demanding puzzles.

Q: Will my records stay if I refresh the page?

A: Records are stored in the current browser session only. Refreshing or closing the page will clear your history, and a new session will start fresh.

Q: Why doesn’t clicking a number do anything?

A: The chord action only works when the number of flagged neighbors exactly matches the number on the cell. If they don’t match, the click is ignored—check your flags first before trying again.

Tips for beginners

Start with the Beginner board and try opening corners or edge cells first, since they have fewer neighbors and are often easier to reason about. When you uncover a cell with a 0, you can safely expand from it to quickly reveal a large safe area and speed up the game.
